Aussie band Methyl Ethel have somehow managed to remain relatively under the radar in the UK despite creating such inventive and engaging music. New album Everything Is Forgotten was released in March and included this absolute gem.

Ubu has so much going for it. Based around a formidable bassline that we could happily listen to all day, the song builds through jangly guitars before landing in an almost other-worldly prism of repetition that probably shouldn’t work but really does. They’ve even gone and done a very trippy Clockwork Orange-esque video to accompany it for crying out loud!

The intriguing journey that the song sweeps you up on is reminiscent of the kind of thing Metronomy and Everything Everything have proved themselves more than capable of over the years, but Ubu is about as fine an example as you can get of a track with many facets which reveal themselves in a multitude of ways each time you listen to it. An immaculate piece of art.
