US superstar DJ Steve Aoki brought his euphoric electro-house dance energy to Cardiff for this leg of his UK tour and it was a truly immersive experience.
During what was a super-energetic gig throughout, Aoki regularly climbed up onto his mixing decks during songs, getting the crowd well and truly into things.
The show was also interspersed with blasts from the confetti and CO2 cannons to add an extra level to visual proceedings. But unlike some DJs on the circuit, Aoki doesn’t sit back and rely on the big screens and pyrotechnics to do all the work – he does more than any of his peers to get the crowd jumping side-to-side in sync to create a real sense of being part of a very special show.
It’s all a far cry from many DJ sets which can come across either as repetitive or with a sense of disconnect from the crowd. That wasn’t the case here… not by a long way, with his fan-focused approach borne out by his free pre-show meet and greet – a real rarity in any music genre.
And for a select few in the crowd, the ultimate Steve Aoki badge of honour – being on the receiving end of one of several cakes he likes to throw during his shows. Proof, if it were needed, that if you’re an Aoki fan, you can have your cake and eat it.
